While these breaks can certainly have its joyful moments, there’s something about meeting up with friends and family that can lead to an air of chaos. If you’re expecting guests who have a tendency of getting caught in hairy situations, it just might be smart to take a few safety precautions along the way.

To ensure a very merry Christmas break, here are a few home safety tips homeowners should keep in mind while weathering the holidays.

Monitor Ice and Snow
If you’re expecting a degree of icy or snowy weather throughout the holidays, it may be wise to make some extra efforts to keep your driveway and sidewalks cleared. You may have family members in town who aren’t used to dealing with frosty conditions. Take precautions that no one gets hurt from slipping on unattended patches of ice. With that said, those that may have the impulse of piling on the sidewalk salt or other ice melt solutions should wait and rethink their options.

While effective at melting ice, rock salt can also damage shoes and clothing, and its corrosive effects can even damage vehicles as well as your home’s masonry. According to the EPA, salt causes roughly five billion dollars worth of damage on an annual basis, and ice melt products can have long-reaching effects on your lawn, extending cracks in the cement and expediting erosion. Take the time to hunt for environmentally-friendly options and then use it sparingly only after shoveling for the best experience.

Anticipate Electrical Overload
With more guests in the home than usual, it’s reasonable to expect a bit more power demand. Often, homeowners don’t realize that they’re running near their limitations of single circuit power usage until someone new comes along and plugs in an extra heater, hairdryer, or laptop charger. Rather than deal with the ensuing panic from an outage, realize that overloads are easily correctable with some reconfiguration.

Usually outages occur when a single circuit is overloaded, so homeowners can work to utilize their circuits that are under less use by moving new devices into these other parts of the house. If you don’t already have access to your home’s circuit map, it may be useful to create your own and then make a rough calculation to determine where you may be close to exceeding a circuit’s limitation (for more information on how to create a circuit map, check out this guide from experts at the Family Handyman).

One final point regarding electrical concerns: keep in mind that if guests bring their pets along for the trip, extra precautions may be needed to tuck cords and Christmas lights away from easy access. Cats and dogs are notorious for letting their curiosity get the better of them. In this case, it may be better to help them avoid a shocking life lesson.

Cook with Ambition (and Prepare a Backup)
Family reunions tend to be accompanied by an anticipated feast, and as the host, it’s not out of the ordinary to try new things. Broadening your cooking horizons is a great idea! But for those that are particularly inexperienced in the kitchen, take some time to review a few basic cooking safety tips before diving head first into that new recipe.

Start off by confirming that your emergency equipment is working properly (meaning your smoke alarm, fire extinguisher, and first aid kit). Then, make sure you are appropriately attired for the job - that means no dangling necklaces or loose-fitting clothing that could get tangled up in the activity. Finally, most kitchen fires occur simply due to leaving food unattended. Limit distractions and maybe recruit a cooking partner, then have at it (and review some extra cooking safety tips per the Red Cross)!

As a final note, although fumbling a new recipe and having to pivot to a tried-and-true backup can be disappointing, remember that the main point of the holidays is to enjoy each other’s company. Best of luck!

From everyone here at National Property Inspections, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a Happy New Year!
1566How to be a Good Host During the Holidayshttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1564/how-to-be-a-good-host-during-the-holidaysCleaning Tips,Holiday,Home Decor,Home Inspection,Home Maintenance,Just for Fun,SafetyMon, 11 Dec 2023 19:09:00 GMT
HOW TO BE A GOOD HOST DURING THE HOLIDAYS
December 11, 2023 | Home Maintenance, Cleaning Tips, Home Decor, Home Inspection, Safety, Holiday, Just For Fun | winter, living room, roof, home exterior, organization, entertaining, kids

Hosting family and friends over the holidays can be a tough task. On one hand, it’s wonderful to reconnect with loved ones, especially those that live far away. On the other hand, getting a busy home in order can feel like an intimidating task after a year of balancing a demanding work schedule along with messy pets, and maybe kids with their own affinity for chaos. In preparation for the holidays, here are a few extra things that you can do to go above and beyond making your out-of-town guests feel welcome!

Check On Your Roof’s Stability
One pet peeve that is so common for guests is lack of decent parking. Whatever system that’s worked for your family throughout the rest of the year likely will have to change at least a bit once a new vehicle is introduced. So, unless you’re blessed with a larger-than-average parking situation, consider thinking ahead for some alternatives that allow extra room for guests.

The common holiday struggle of juggling cars in the driveway is exactly why some considerate guests may take it upon themselves to use some sorely underutilized parking areas - such as the space on top of your roof. What many fail to realize is roofs are left tragically unused by the majority of homeowners. Their surface area is easily large enough to house the family vehicle, whether you drive a GMC Yukon or a sleigh with eight to nine tiny reindeer.

Of course, the one issue with this parking space is that homeowners can be neglectful of their roofs. Between loose shingles and the build up of moss and algae due to moisture, roofs can commonly see their lifespans shortened if certain issues are left unaddressed. This leaves more room for water intrusion and increasingly unstable footholds for roof pedestrians. According to home maintenance professionals over at This Old House, water damage due to a leaky roof is actually one of the most costly issues homeowners face.

Checking up on your roof’s condition through a home maintenance inspection with a residential inspection professional, or even conducting a few DIY roof maintenance activities on your own may be wise in preparation for your holiday guests.

Ensure Easy Chimney Access
When it comes to welcoming your guests into your home, it’s also wise to start off with a good first impression. Entryways and mudrooms have a tendency to gather clutter over time with coats, boots, and bags all vying for their own convenient resting places. Because of this, it’s understandable that these spaces can become blindspots for home organization efforts - but this common issue doesn’t have to become a hurdle during the holiday season!

Try to set some time aside to reorganize all of your entryways, find new permanent homes for any clutter or stray items, and consider developing a new system to keep these areas that way in the meantime. We’ve previously discussed the benefits of doing this before the school year, but these concepts can come in handy any time of the year if your home is in need of a bit of a reset!

On the subject of cluttered entryways, one route that is almost universally ignored is, of course, the chimney! Climbing down the flue at late hours of the night (while often battling slippery rooftop snow and ice) is tough enough on its own before encountering the dust, soot, and sometimes other obstructions like twigs, bird’s nests, or even living animals. Did you know that neglected chimneys naturally fill up with flammable materials, and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected every year (check out their informational video on this subject)?

Before the holidays, take some time to clean up all of your entryways and order a chimney inspection! For more information on the importance of chimney maintenance, here are a few things that can go wrong when left ignored for too long.

Consider Some New Home Decor
Finally, nothing makes a guest feel welcome quite like some nice, nostalgic, cozy holiday decor. Take some time to hang stockings by the chimney, add lights to your front doorway, and wrap garland around your banister. Or go all out with the holiday decorating traditions your family enjoys! Celebrating the holidays with your guests can look very different from household to household, but those that make the effort to clearly switch things up will have a lot more luck ushering in some yuletide glee.

Now concerning snacks, it is safe to assume that your guests will get a little peckish when you’re not around. Allowing them free reign to rummage through your cupboards can feel invasive. Instead, leave out a plate at night (preferably near the chimney) and add your choice of midnight treats (maybe a few sugar cookies and a cup of milk, for example). Ultimately, there’s no exact formula for creating a festive home. But if you’re looking for more ideas and inspiration, here are a few more options to ensure a very Merry Christmas.

Still wondering if your home is ready for the rigor of your upcoming winter shindig? Contact your local NPI Inspector to see how they can help prep your home for the holidays!
1564Pet-Proofing Your Home for the Holidayshttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1433/pet-proofing-your-home-for-the-holidaysHoliday,Just for Fun,SafetyMon, 12 Dec 2022 18:11:00 GMT
PET-PROOFING YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
December 12, 2022 | Holiday, Safety, Just for Fun | winter, pets, new homeowner

The holiday season marks a unique time of the year. Storefronts light up with Christmas cheer and nostalgic music fills the air as we all rush off to find that perfect gift. Unfortunately, pet owners can often get left behind in the festivities. Furry friends work to tear homes apart while simultaneously endangering themselves in the new stimulating surroundings. Too often, pet owners choose to opt out of holiday decorations rather than deal with rambunctious cats or dogs. This season, here are a few options to consider reentering the holiday with pet-safe decorations.

Secure The Right Tree
Central to any Christmas-celebrating home is the Christmas Tree. There are fabulous variations on the tradition, and oftentimes families have their own preferred rituals involving how and when to decorate their tree. Adding a cat or dog into the picture can throw a considerable wrench into the process, however, as habits need to be adjusted in the best interest of protecting decorations, and keeping pets safe.

Although there is some debate on which type of tree presents the fewest hazards, artificial trees ultimately introduce fewer toxins into the household. Still, artificial trees can drop plastic pieces that are harmful if ingested. For the safest experience, select an artificial tree, and pay close attention to any shedding, cleaning up any small scraps as they fall off.

Hazards that live trees bring center primarily around the pine needles that it sheds. If your dog or cat steps on one of these easily missed needles, they can cause quite a bit of pain and discomfort. If ingested, however, the toxins and damage can be even worse. With all trees, but especially with live trees, utilize strategic barriers and then vacuum thoroughly and often.

For advice on how to select the best live tree this season, check out our previous article covering the topic!

There are countless tips to keep a tree even with the most destructively curious pets. Consider tying the tree to the ceiling or other furniture for extra support and to avoid any cataclysmic falls. Additionally, using attention deterrents like aluminum sheets or tape under the tree for a period can dissuade some adventurous pets, and cats are known to dislike the scent of citrus. Strategic sprays can surprisingly be all that’s needed to maintain an orderly living space during this holiday season.

Avoid Breakable Hazards
From ornaments to snow globes, the holidays seem to come with plenty of opportunities for pets to break something valuable. In general, keeping tree ornaments out of reach is usually not enough to avoid breakage. Be sure to secure any ornament to trees with non-metal fasteners. Cats and dogs are likely to jump and shake trees, but if ornaments are firmly attached, destructive drops can be avoided. On the occasion that an ornament does fall, metal hooks can be especially damaging when chewed on or eaten, so it’s best to avoid them altogether.

Snow globes are a beautiful holiday decoration that present a fair number of hazards to pets outside of potentially harmful glass shards. Snow globes also contain antifreeze, which is fatal to cats. Whether they are out of reach or out of the picture completely, be wary of snow globes this winter.

Select Safe Indoor Plants
Greenery is a common addition to households during the holiday season, but when not selecting artificial options, it’s important not to bring in plants that could present any health risks. Some popular Christmas-time plants that are hazardous to cats include Amaryllis, Cyclamen, and particularly Lilies, which present a fatal risk. Holly, ivy, yew, and Christmas roses also contain toxins that can present health risks to pets.

For pet-safe greenery, consider choosing Christmas cactus, white orchids, or autumn olives. In addition, poinsettias have been considered toxic in the past, but are actually only mildly toxic and generally a recommended option for pet owners.

Follow these guidelines to celebrate the holidays with your pets safely! Pets can certainly be a handful at times, but for many they are as much a part of the family as anyone. Follow these tips, and celebrate the New Year the right way.

Speaking of safety, the best way to gain peace of mind for your home is with your annual home maintenance inspection.Find a home inspection professional in your area with National Property Inspections, and schedule your appointment today!
1433Correctly Choosing a Live Christmas Treehttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1430/correctly-choosing-a-live-christmas-treeDIY,Holiday,Home Decor,Just for FunMon, 05 Dec 2022 18:45:00 GMT
CORRECTLY CHOOSING A LIVE CHRISTMAS TREE
December 5, 2022 | Home Decor, DIY, Holiday, Just for Fun | winter, entertaining

Despite artificial trees being a common option for most people, live trees are still very popular. Around 30 million live trees are sold each year at tree farms. They’re a nice touch for those that want a more authentic holiday feel. If you’ve been thinking about picking out a live tree for your celebration, here’s what you need to know to find the right one.

Pick Out a Spot at Home
Before you head to the lot to chop down your tree, be certain you can actually get it in your home first. While movies like Christmas Vacation and Elf make fun of picking out a comically large Tannenbaum, in reality they can be a headache. You may end up having to drastically trim it down and be left with a pile of twigs as opposed to a pristine pine. Pick out where you want to place your new tree, and measure the area on the floor and the distance between the floor and ceiling. You’ll also want to be sure you have an adequate stand for the tree to keep it from tipping over. (To prevent your tree from going up in a blaze of glory, keep it away from heating vents and of course fireplaces and heaters.)

Research the Tree You Want
Another good step to complete before you purchase a tree is to research the different kinds. Different species will grow in different locations, so not every one will be available to you. Cypresses, pines, firs, and spruces are typically the most common types. Each has its own lifespan, care needs, and even smell or coloring. Ask the attendant helping you to provide more information on the species they have.

Check the Freshness
Most trees can last up to a month when taken care of properly. However, your tree needs to be as fresh as possible when you buy it so you won’t have to take it to the curb early. When checking it over, lightly bend the needles. A fir that’s fresh will have needles that snap whereas pines shouldn’t. Look at the ground around the tree and see if there’s a lot of needles. A shake test will also let you know freshness, as only a small amount of needles should fall off. Color is another good indicator of the tree’s age, and in this instance, it’s best to go for one as green as possible.

Check for Animals
To avoid the “wily squirrel in the tree fiasco,” double-check you won’t be taking any critters back home with you. Squirrels, birds, and some other small animals tend to make themselves at home in trees. Look for signs of a nest further back in the branches. If you do spot one, see if you can find any fresh signs of life. A tree that’s occupied is better left alone and reported to the lot staff.

Cut it to Last
Making the right cut is crucial to your tree lasting more than a few days. For starters, use a saw designed for the tree so you don’t damage the trunk. Cut up an inch or so from the ground. This will allow the tree to properly re-sprout on the end and be able to take water. Don’t let the tree timber over, as it can cause the bark to splinter and tear off. After you’ve cut it, take it home as soon as possible to keep the sap from scabbing over the end and hindering re-sprouting.

Give Your Tree Back
When you’re done with your tree for the holidays, you can re-gift it. Some recycling programs use the trees for mulch or other biodegradable purposes. Animal sanctuaries or zoos can also use the trees as food. You can still keep the giving spirit going!

For help with all your home inspection needs, contact National Property Inspections today.
14306 Great Gifts For First-Time Homeownershttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1425/6-great-gifts-for-first-time-homeownersHoliday,Home DecorMon, 28 Nov 2022 17:27:00 GMT
6 GREAT GIFTS FOR FIRST-TIME HOMEOWNERS
November 28, 2022 | Home Decor, Holiday | winter, first-time homeowner, new homeowner

Now that Thanksgiving is firmly in the rearview mirror, season’s greetings! Happy holidays! Merry Christmas! It’s the season of giving, and for your family or friends that have gifted themselves their first homes, now is the perfect time to get them something to help them in their home-owning journey. Becoming a rookie homeowner can be difficult, so congratulate your loved ones with one of these essential housewarming gifts (that they will absolutely thank you for).

Tool “Starter” Kit
Just because someone is a first-time homeowner, does not necessarily mean they aren’t “handy.” However, until someone is forced to buy a tool set for regular repairs and maintenance, they usually won’t. Rather than continuing to rely on a friend or family member to borrow tools as the need arises, any new homeowner in your life will greatly appreciate a basic tool starter kit or drill set of their own. In comparison to living in an apartment, home ownership naturally leads to much more personal responsibility to make repairs. While other gifts might be more flashy, nothing will be more appreciated in the long run than a simple tool set.

Yard Gear
While we are on the subject of basic tools and maintenance, a first-time homeowner who doesn’t have indoor tools yet, they are even less likely to have the necessary supplies for yard work. Anything from basic supplies like shovels, to larger investments like lawn mowers, yard gear is an extensive category that often can be neglected when it comes to housewarming gifts. Again, these basic tools will be greatly appreciated in the long run, so don’t overlook something like a high quality rake for a housewarming gift. As a last note for tools, there’s nothing wrong with keeping things general with something like a Home Depot gift card. Resorting to gift cards can feel like giving up, but along with homeownership, home improvement projects are never far behind.

Organizers (Tools, Lids, Under-the-Sink Bins, and More)
With more space, first-time homeowners will quickly accumulate things. As those things start to pile up, pretty soon those things are buried under other things until nothing is accessible and storage becomes an intimidating mess. Organization is a constant fight, but you can help them win their battle before things get out of hand. Sorting containers for under the sink, organizers for small tool items like screws and nails, and holders for food container lids save a surprising amount of rummaging time and will surely cut down on unneeded frustration.

Lightbulbs and Air Filters
One eye-opening realization in store for any first-time homeowner is the amount of regular maintenance that comes with keeping a house in its best condition. With this in mind, things like extra light bulbs are constantly overlooked by new homeowners. In addition, HVAC companies generally recommend changing air filters every 90 days. By gifting these simple replacement items, these gifts will help your greenhorn homeowners get stocked up on supplies they will definitely use in the future.

Home Maintenance Guide
Speaking of home maintenance, keeping to a regular maintenance routine will help home systems run better and for longer. Adding some type of home maintenance schedule to a housewarming gift can go a long way towards keeping your first-timers organized and informed with seasonal checklists. Check out our Home Maintenance Guide PDF to start your own regular home maintenance routine, and feel free to add it to any housewarming gift!

Thumbtack Subscription
Lastly, while new homeowners may be excited to jump into their own DIY home improvement projects right away, some projects are likely to be out of their comfort zone. Thumbtack is an excellent company that offers an expansive catalog of professionally-vetted home improvement specialists equipped to aid in any ambitious undertaking. Gift a subscription to their service here to give your first-time homeowner friends confidence on any upcoming home improvement endeavors.

What are your signature housewarming gifts for first-time homeowners? Homeowners are always looking for ways to cut down on expenses, so for this holiday season, save a bit of goodwill for yourself! Here are four ways to keep warm for the holidays - without touching the thermostat.

1. Daylight Savings
Autumn and winter can mark a significant shift in your energy usage. There might be less sunlight to go around, but that doesn’t mean what’s left has to go to waste. Open your curtains and let as much sun into your home as possible to take advantage of this natural heat source. South-facing windows, in particular, have the greatest potential to benefit from winter sun beams, so do your best to capture this free advantage during daylight hours.

Remember, while opening your curtains and blinds will help to capture heat during the day, it will do the opposite once the sun sets. Closing your curtains at night will be the best way to retain that daytime heat and reduce dropping temperatures from nighttime chills.

2. Plugging Leaks
Icy breezes are relentless. Anyone who has opened an outer door on a particularly crisp morning knows how quickly that gust of winter wind can find its way inside. That’s why it’s important for homeowners to find any potential air leaks and secure them before temperatures drop too much.

Some of the worst perpetrators of air leaks are external doors and windows. Check weather stripping and seals around your door frames, replace or repair any that are damaged or missing, and consider investing in window film. Using caulk for cracks can also be a cost-effective strategy to defend against frigid winds. Of note, attics and basements are frequent offenders for developing unnoticed outdoor openings, and forgetting to close your fireplace dampers means easy entry for cool air.

3. Working Vents
Your vents are your heating delivery system for your home, so make sure you are getting effective usage from them. Check your furniture arrangement to see if you are inadvertently blocking air flow from your vents, and make sure your vents aren’t closed. These blockages could result in unneeded extra strain from your furnace or boiler.

On the other hand, make sure your vents associated with unused sections of your home aren’t open. Vacant rooms can be cut off by keeping doors shut and vents closed and covered. While this won’t necessarily keep you warmer, it’s a good way to save some money and reduce strain on your heating systems.

4. Regular Maintenance
The last thing, and probably the best thing you can do to keep warm this winter, is to ensure that your heating systems are working properly. Always keep up with your regular annual home maintenance inspections and rely on the professionals to make sure your home is in good shape heading into the winter. A trained home inspector knows where to look, and what to look for.

Still, if your furnace isn’t performing up to expectations, you might be due for a change in your furnace filter. When your furnace is experiencing higher usage (namely in the winter), filters need to be changed monthly for the best effect.

To make sure your home is in good shape for the winter, start with your annual NPI home maintenance inspection! Chimneys are a too-often neglected home amenity, and there are a few hazards homeowners should be aware of. For a warm and safe holiday season, here are a few things about your chimney that you might want to check in on.

Obstructions
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends that chimneys be inspected every year, and for good reason! Apart from just ensuring that your chimney is performing as intended, a neglected chimney can result in dangerous house fires or toxic smoke inhalation. A chief factor that can cause these issues is an obstruction within the chimney flue.

Any number of obstructions can become dangerous hazards to homeowners. Twigs and leaves can gather, acting as additional kindling, and animals can commonly get stuck inside a chimney flue while searching for warmth or shelter. Depending on your local wildlife, some of the most common animals found in chimneys in North America include raccoons, bats, cats, squirrels, and birds (whose nests also act as additional fire-starters).

Creosote
The interior of a chimney can reach heats of above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Because of this, keeping your chimney clear of flammable materials is extremely important. The most common flammable material inside chimneys is a material called creosote.

Creosote is a flammable residue that builds up in the flue of your chimney as smoke accumulates and develops into soot. With regular cleaning and selecting healthy wood to burn, creosote can be managed. However, creosote can ignite at temperatures as low as 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Remember, even small fires can develop into larger house fires if appropriate measures aren’t taken in advance.

Moisture & Leaking
Another concern homeowners should have in relation to their chimneys is the build up of moisture, or even leaking from the chimney. Damaged masonry, cracked or spalling brickwork, and missing chimney caps can result in easy entry for rain into the home. Especially in older properties, chimneys can deteriorate.

Those trained in chimney repairs can perform mortar tuckpointing to keep up general exterior maintenance, but more extensive repairs may be necessary to ensure that your chimney won’t compromise your home from additional damage in severe weather conditions.

Smoke & Odor
When people use their fireplace, they’re probably picturing an experience that’s warm and comfortable, not smoky or musty. Odor and smoke can come from a number of different sources, namely dead animals stuck inside the chimney, wet creosote buildup, or simply using poor quality wood.

Avoid this through your regular chimney inspections, consistent maintenance, and by selecting quality dry wood. Green or wet wood produces more smoke than heat when burned, and this smoke can even be toxic to your kids or pets.

Chimneys can add an incredible amount of character to a home and the luxury it adds cannot be overstated. Like all home amenities, your chimney simply requires the maintenance and attention it deserves.

Chimney damage can be overlooked by an untrained eye. However, that perfect evening can be a mess if you fail to snag dinner reservations in time or you’re stressing about outdoing yourself from last year. If you want to save yourself from scrambling around at the last minute and still give a gift from the heart, here’s how you can have the perfect date night without ever leaving your home!

Put on your chef’s hat and apron.
There’s nothing quite like a full heart (and stomach) that comes from a delicious home-cooked meal. Recreate a meal from one of your favorite restaurants, or try out something new. You definitely don’t have to be the most skilled cook either. You might be surprised at how fun it can be to sharpen your culinary skills and make a meal for the person you love.

Channel your inner Bob Ross.
From showcasing your artistry in the kitchen to showing it on the canvas, go ahead and break out the paint brushes and easels. There are tons of tutorials on YouTube that you can follow to create a masterpiece. You can do as many as you want and show off your finished gallery to your friends and family as well.

Make a cozy movie marathon.
A classic date night, cuddling up and putting on your favorite movie or TV show is both fun and relaxing. Use some blankets and pillows to make a comfy home theater along with some string lights to get the full experience. Don’t forget to buy your favorite snacks, pour a drink, and pop some fresh popcorn!

Set up a fun game night.
For hours of entertainment and a dash of nostalgia, a board game is the perfect match. Pick some of your favorites or a few new ones to try out and pair them with your favorite drink for lots of laughs. Of course for something more modern, virtual trivia or other video games are just as enjoyable.

Save your memories in a scrapbook.
It’s always great to look back and reminisce on certain memories. Whether it’s a trip you took or your first date, your story together is one of a kind. Gather your photos or keepsakes you’ve collected and put them together in your own scrapbook. Decorate it however you want and write notes about your fondest times. In no time at all, you’ll have a special memento to detail your journey!

Have a PowerPoint party.
A recent trend spurred by the hit social media app TikTok, presentation parties aren’t your typical homework assignment. You can choose a topic about anything from your favorite qualities about each other to 10 famous people you look like. The more outlandish the subject, the better for a combination of weirdness and hilarity.

Make a theme for your date night.
To tie your whole night together, choose a theme to follow. It can be reminiscent of your first night together, or you can choose a destination that you’ve both always wanted to go to. Put up decorations, play music and coordinate your meals and activities for an immersive experience.

Whatever you choose for your night in, it’s sure to be one you won’t soon forget!

Find your local inspector today to schedule a full inspection of your home. However, they require special care in order to maintain their uniqueness. As the cold rolls on, it can be the toughest time of the year for your hardwood floors. The good news is with some diligence, your floors will stay looking like new through wintertime.

Changing Temperatures
As the weather starts to cool off, it can cause your floors to change as well. Major differences in temperature make the wooden planks shrink and create gaps. Then when they warm back up, they can crack. If you like to crank the heat inside your home, consider dropping it back a few degrees. That way the difference in temperature won’t be as extreme. It also helps to use a humidifier to keep some moisture in the air that can be absorbed by your floor.

Tracking Things Inside
There’s a whole assortment of debris that you track in your home during winter. Sand, salt, and snow all make a mess of your floors and cause lasting damage. The tiny pieces caught in your boots can scratch up the surface, and if you don’t clean the water and de-icer right away, unsightly stains will start to appear. Using floor mats and placing some by entryways will help keep some of the mess under control. Staying on top of cleaning up after the foot traffic in your home by sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping with a mild cleaner will keep your floors fresh.

Teach and Train
If you have a full house of family, friends, or even pets, try to get everyone on board with taking care of your floors. Kindly ask when they remove their shoes to keep them on the mats you’ve placed down. For pets, it might be a little trickier to get them to cooperate. Training with treats to wait by the door until you’ve cleaned them off is one way to get them to follow the rules. If you have younger children, you can try making a game out of following the rules of staying off the floor with wet shoes.

Preventative Care
Getting ahead of winter problems is the best way to keep your floors in top shape. Polishing your floors will make them stand out more and protect the finish. Also, using a cleaner that’s a bit more eco-friendly will replenish some of the wood’s natural elements. A water-resistant clear coat will help preserve your floor’s look and make it easier to clean melted snow and sand. Repairing and replacing severely worn planks when needed will limit the number of those that have a chance to split or crack from the cold. If your floor was recently installed, it may even be covered by a warranty in case it starts to deteriorate.

You and your wood floors don’t have to dread the cold this year. Just a little bit of work will keep them looking like new for years to come!

Schedule your NPI home inspection today.
Find an NPI inspector near you to schedule your full home inspection. The odorless, colorless gas can go undetected in a home for years and only get noticed when it’s too late. During the winter, radon levels can spike indoors and pose even more of a threat to you. With January being Radon Action Month, it’s a great opportunity to lower your radon risk during the colder months.

Radon and the Cold
As the temperature begins to drop outside, radon levels can start to rise in your home. Winter is almost equal to summertime in terms of radon spikes. Although everyone has minimal exposure to radon at all times, certain factors can contribute to you being exposed to unsafe levels. A few of the causes of higher radon during cold months are:

More time indoors

Less fresh air

Stack effect

Cold or frozen soil

Stuck Inside
Winter brings with it chilly temperatures that usually keep us inside. However, being stuck inside for several months can be dangerous. If your home already has above-safe levels of radon, you’re increasing the chances of severe health risks by staying shut in. Especially if you have a below-ground level that you like to spend time in, you’re putting yourself even closer to radon.

Closed Up Home
You probably won’t be able to open up your home as often during winter. This means less fresh air circulating inside. During warmer months, allowing fresh air to enter your home can help dilute any radon gas. In winter, closing your doors and windows the majority of the time allows the gas to build up. That gas can then stay in your home for days and stay at a high level as more creeps in.

Blanketing Snow
Snow and frozen soil can create a blanket effect around your home. This causes radon gas to follow the path of least resistance– your home’s foundation. Much like your closed up home, frozen ground allows for the radon gas to build up more. With your home being its only means of escape, that built up gas all starts flowing in through your foundation. Unfortunately, there’s no great way to “release” the radon gas from underneath the snow aside from warming the ground.

The Stack Effect
The stack or chimney effect is a very common issue for multi-level houses. Sometimes even called the vacuum effect, this instance happens when there are drastic differences between the temperature inside and outside your home. As the hot air rises, it tries to escape through the highest level of your home. Your home will then begin to pull air from the lowest level, which oftentimes contains harmful radon gas. The gas then moves through your home as it circulates around and puts your health at risk.

Protecting Yourself from Wintertime Radon
It can be difficult to mitigate your risk of high radon exposure during the winter. For the most part, you’re at the mercy of the elements. The best thing you can do to mitigate the chance of prolonged exposure is getting outside as much as you can when the weather warms up. If you can, try to crack a window or two for a bit and allow fresh air to enter. A heat recovery ventilator can also help by using outgoing air to heat up fresh air, which can save you money. Even reversing your fans will reduce the amount of radon in the otherwise stagnant air. Of course, the best way to protect yourself is by performing regular testing and installing a mitigation system. You’ll know when radon levels are getting to unsafe levels and can act quickly to stay safe.

Inspect to Prevent
Before purchasing a home, always have it inspected by a licensed professional. Find your local NPI radon inspector and schedule an appointment today!
132910 Easy Ways to Create a Festive Homehttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1326/10-easy-ways-to-create-a-festive-homeDIY,Holiday,Home DecorMon, 13 Dec 2021 17:29:00 GMT
10 EASY WAYS TO CREATE A FESTIVE HOME
December 13, 2021 | Home Decor, Holiday, DIY | winter, entertaining

We all love decorating our homes for the holiday season. Achieving that Hallmark movie look gets us into the spirit and ready to celebrate. However, it can be easy to go overboard and get overwhelmed with your holiday decor. Here are some easy tips you can use to get a festive feel and avoid getting stressed out.

Don’t Overload Your Tree
Decking out your tree with tinsel and ornaments can really make it pop, but too much can make it look like a whirlwind of trimmings. This year, remember to keep your arrangement simple. Only use your favorite ornaments instead of jampacking every single one onto the branches. You can also create some handmade pieces by tying sticks of cinnamon together with ribbon. It’s something different and it’ll give off a great smelling holiday aroma!

Play Some Background Music
The right music will really bring that holiday magic to life. As you go about getting your home ready, turn on your favorite festive playlist. If you’re hosting guests, having a little background music will eliminate awkward silences. You can also ask for suggestions and play musical games like “Guess That Song” or karaoke!

Display Your Holiday Cards
Getting greeting cards and photos from family and friends reminds us what the season is about. Showcase them by creating a thoughtful display. You can either hang them up or arrange them into a centerpiece on the table.

Swap For Seasonal Furniture
The little touches make all the difference. One simple touch you can do is to put out more seasonal items. Pillows, tapestries, and other furnishings will give a warm, cheery ambiance.

Use Candles
Candles are a classic decoration that bring joy and serenity to your gathering. Place some around the dinner table or by your other decor (just be sure not place them too close). Of course, scented ones such as pine or gingerbread will fill your home with the best holiday aromas.

Make a Snack Station
If you’ve been busy making lots of delicious treats, put them out to share with everyone. You can make a snack bar with cookies and hot chocolate for your guests to browse. Decorate the station with a little festive flair to make it match the rest of your theme.

Make a Great First Impression
Sprucing up your entryway acts as the finishing touch to your holiday decorating. You can just go with a simple wreath, or add a few more trimmings for a more elaborate look. A small tree or some garland and lights will literally light it up. Try out your own combinations to really make it your own!

Bring the Snow Inside
What better way to get into the seasonal mood than by making your own winter wonderland? Sprinkle around some artificial snow to get that full seasonal feeling and immerse yourself. Put it on your tree to make it look like it’s fresh from the forest. If you have young children, making footprints with the snow will let them know that Santa Claus has come by!

Incorporate Nature
Using pieces of nature in your design will give it a more authentic feel. Plant clippings, pinecones, sticks, and berries all perfectly accent your arrangement. If you can’t find any real ones, imitations will work fine as well.

Present Your Presents
If you haven’t yet opened up your presents, leave them out as a display. A tree without presents can look a little bare, and having some around the base will make it more presentable. If you don’t have any gifts, wrapping up some old boxes is a good substitute.

Whether you plan to celebrate in person or online, it doesn’t take a lot of work to make a front page home for the holidays!

Make sure your home is ready for any season with an inspection from NPI. Click here to find your local inspector.
1326What to Do with Your Pets for the Holidayshttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1323/what-to-do-with-your-pets-for-the-holidaysHoliday,Home Decor,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 06 Dec 2021 14:38:00 GMT
WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR PETS FOR THE HOLIDAYS
December 6, 2021 | Home Maintenance, Safety, Home Decor, Holiday | winter, entertaining, pets

The holiday season can be stressful for both yourself and your furry friends. While you’re mired in the whirlwind of throwing the perfect celebration, all those guests in the house, loud noises, and new smells can put animals on edge. Here’s what you can do to keep your pets calm and happy during your holiday festivities.

Create a safe retreat for your pets.
All the hustle and bustle that comes with preparing for a holiday party puts unnecessary stress and anxiety on your animals. Especially as your home fills up with people, it can throw them into overdrive. The best thing you can do is make a private, calm space for your pet. Whether it’s your bedroom or a room on a different floor, try to make it as relaxing as possible. Place their bed and some toys along with their bowls in the room to give some semblance of normalcy. It can also help to let your guests know not to enter the room where your pets are staying. If guests want to visit with your animals, it’s best to have a family member present and to only allow one or two additional people into the room at once.

Keep them out of the kitchen.
It’s no secret that our pets love to try and sneak food when our backs are turned. If you’re hosting a large gathering, all those delicious snacks are too much to resist for a curious critter. As you put your entrees and desserts together, block off the kitchen so your pets can’t sneak in. When you’re not cooking, put any food or ingredients in a secure spot that animals can’t easily access. Some harmful items you should certainly be cautious of leaving out are:

Grapes

Chocolate

Cheese

Raisins

Sugar

Garlic

Be careful giving your pets table scraps as well, as too much can lead to stomach distress.

Don’t let them destroy your decor.
Bright, shiny objects are another thing most pets can’t keep their paws off. Ornaments, lights, and tinsel grab your pets’ eye, and soon, they’re trying to tear them down and play. While it’s a nuisance for you, it’s a danger for your animals. Broken and shattered decorations can be easily ingested and cut your pet’s paws. To avoid an emergency vet trip, place your decorations in places that they can’t be easily torn down. A locked hutch can make a great holiday display while keeping your animals out. If you’re unsure about a certain decoration, it might be best to leave it in its box.

Ask your veterinarian for advice.
Your vet is always your best resource. They’ll be able to check your pet’s health and let you know how well they’re holding up for your party. They can also prescribe anti-anxiety medication to calm your pet down when things get hectic. They offer a place for you to relax after a long day and make the perfect spot to entertain guests. As the temperature starts to drop, you might not use your pond as often. To ensure it’s ready come springtime, here’s what you should do.

Should You Turn Your Pond Off?
A frozen pond can look just as beautiful as one in full effect. Especially if you have a large waterfall feature, icicles and snow make the perfect wintery backdrop. However, they can also take a toll on your pond. Ice build-ups make it harder for water to flow through the system and can crack the piping. A pond de-icer or pond heater can help break up these ice dams, but generally it’s better for your pond overall to shut it off for the season if you live where the temperature can hit zero. If you experience more mild winters (50 degrees or above), you’ll likely be fine leaving your pond running.

Clean and Keep Leaves Out
Leaves can turn your beautiful pond into a puddle of muck. In addition, they can also ruin your pond’s pump system and harm any plants or animals that live in the water. Before you cover your pond, remove any stray leaves and debris from the water. Then, set up a pond net to keep the water clean. If you live somewhere that gets heavy snowfalls, a perforated net is better than a solid cover. It’ll keep snow and freezing rain from collecting on the tarp and potentially collapsing it.

Tend to Your Plants
To keep your garden getaway looking pristine, you need to give your plants the right cold-weather care. Hardier plants can typically remain outside all year so long as the pond doesn’t freeze over, but more delicate ones such as lilies should be removed. You can either trim down the foliage or keep them as is and take them inside. In a temperate part of your home, fill up a large tub and place the potted plants in it. This simulated pond will keep them healthy throughout the winter months.

Take Care of Your Fish
Like with your plants, caring for your fish or other animals depends on their breed and the depth of your pond. Larger koi, goldfish, archerfish, and sterlets are just a few of the tougher fish that can withstand lower temperatures in deep water that won’t freeze solid. Other types or even younger fish of these same groups should be removed and cared for inside. For the fish you leave outside, slowly begin acclimating them to the weather. This includes feeding them less often since they won’t be as active. Soon, the fish will naturally enter a kind of hibernation and wake up in the spring.

Clean and Remove Your Filters
To prevent your pond’s filtration system from being damaged by the cold, it’s best to remove it if you aren’t going to run it. Drain the excess water out of the plumbing and clean it out. To keep your fish healthy, use a small recirculating pump. The pump will keep the water oxygenated and help remove harmful gases. If you still want to add some flair to your pond without having it run fully, a bubbler will do the trick.

A professional home inspection with NPI will help keep your home in its best condition, inside and out. Find your local inspector today!
1320Turn Up the Heat: Prepping Your HVAC System for Winterhttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/1311/turn-up-the-heat-prepping-your-hvac-system-for-winterCleaning Tips,Home Maintenance,SafetyMon, 08 Nov 2021 20:05:00 GMT
TURN UP THE HEAT: PREPPING YOUR HVAC SYSTEM FOR WINTER
November 8, 2021 | Home Maintenance, Safety, Cleaning Tips | fall, winter, HVAC, appliances, ventilation

As the colder months roll in, it’s time to start preparing your home for chilly weather. One item you need to have on your weatherization to-do list is readying your HVAC system. Especially in locations that get sub-zero temperatures, your heating system will start working overtime. But before you flip on your heater, you need to ensure that it’s ready to go.

Change out your air filters.
Prior to turning your heater on, swap out the old air filters. These are one of the most important components of keeping your HVAC running efficiently. Clean air filters will also help if you suffer from allergies by cutting down on the amount of dust that’s recycled through your home. There are certain filters that are less porous and catch more dirt to cut down on allergens. However, these styles can hinder airflow and make your HVAC overheat.

Clear space around your heater and vents.
Being able to easily access your heater is essential to maintaining it. That means moving any furniture, boxes, or kid’s toys that are blocking your path. Keep about a three-foot radius around your heater to allow for maintenance work and prevent anything nearby from catching on fire. If you have floor vents, move items away from them as well, and check that they’re open. That way the heat will be properly dispersed throughout your home.

Clean out furnace burners.
This step is better left to a professional to avoid damaging your burners. When your furnace isn’t being used, dust and rust can collect on the burners. This can lead to costly repairs, and it might also release an unpleasant odor when the heater kicks on. An HVAC technician can clean the burners and replace any that aren’t working correctly. There may still be a slight burning smell within the first few cycles of use. If the scent doesn’t go away, you should call the technician back out.

Check the batteries in your alarm systems.
The risks of fire or carbon monoxide poisoning can increase dramatically during the winter months. Whether it’s from poor maintenance or incorrect installation, running your heater 24/7 can expedite these issues. Change the batteries in your detectors, and test that they’re all working properly. Remember: you should have at least one in each room and one on each floor of your home.

Don’t start out running at 100 percent.
Going from dormant to full blast can also be dangerous for your heater. Even if you’ve properly prepped your system, you run the risk of damaging something. Instead, slowly build up to the desired temperature you want for most of the winter season. Adjust the thermostat a few degrees each day, and keep track of how well your heater is handling the change. This will help you catch issues early on and prolong the life of your HVAC system.

Don’t get dried out.
Aside from your heater, winter can take a toll on your health. Being closed up inside with the heat going sucks the moisture out of the air. You can get sick easier and may notice that your skin gets dry. Your home’s flooring, walls, and other components might also suffer from dry air and begin to crack or warp. A good way to combat this is using humidifiers to replenish the moisture in your home.

Have a professional inspect your system.
Of course, the best way to ensure that your HVAC is ready for winter is having it checked by a professional. They’ll be able to thoroughly test your system and see that all vents inside and outside are working properly. An inspection with NPI can give you the knowledge you need about your home’s major components. Find your local inspector, and schedule an inspection today!
1311How to Have a Healthy and Jolly Virtual Holiday Seasonhttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/910/how-to-have-a-healthy-and-jolly-virtual-holiday-seasonHoliday,Just for Fun,SafetyMon, 21 Dec 2020 17:03:00 GMT
HOW TO HAVE A HEALTHY AND JOLLY VIRTUAL HOLIDAY SEASON
December 21, 2020 | Holiday, Safety, Just For Fun | winter, entertaining

More than 115 million people traveled for the holidays in 2019, but this year will look a little different. Many are forgoing their usual party plans and opting to stay at home and celebrate. But just because you might not be able to be close, doesn’t mean that you can't still celebrate some of your favorite festive traditions.

Host a virtual baking day.
The holidays wouldn’t be the same without festive food. While your meals may be smaller, you can still have fun making all those delicious dishes and desserts you make just once a year. Set up a virtual event with your friends so everyone can prepare their favorite food and swap recipes. You’ll also likely learn fun facts about the history of a certain food or tradition you might not have known before!

Put a new spin on holiday arts and crafts.
Along with gingerbread houses, there’s an assortment of holiday projects you can do. Have each family purchase the same craft box and get to building. To make it even more exciting, set a time limit and have incentives for the winners. The shorter the time, the higher the chance for creative projects and guaranteed laughs.

Stream your favorite movies and shows.
A personal watch party for your top holiday programs will really get you into the spirit. Grab your snacks and fuzziest blanket and have a binge-watching session leading up to the holidays. At the end, have everyone give their top ten films and vote on which is the best movie for the season. There’s sure to be some lively discussions!

Perform a seasonal scavenger hunt.
If you want to have a more active virtual party, a scavenger hunt is perfect. Compile a list of some common household items or Christmas decorations to have people search for. Split up into teams for a competitive and entertaining game. For tie-breaking bonus points, see who can find the most unusual item in their home.

Sing Christmas carol karaoke.
No Christmas celebration is complete without showing off your golden voice to the tune of some classic songs. Queue up a list of songs that you’ve put together and press play. You can hold a laid-back concert or you can create a singing showdown complete with a tournament, judges and prizes.

Merry ad libs.
Another creative pastime is formulating your very own Yuletide stories. Like the hit game Mad Libs, everyone can get involved and contribute their original ideas. Go around and have everyone contribute a sentence or two to keep the story moving. Don’t forget to record your reading as it’s likely to be an interesting time!

Direct each other’s decorating.
A gag everyone can get in on is rearranging each other’s decorations. Let your virtual party guests take the reins and design your room how they see fit. Try to see who can come up with the craziest ideas!

Talk about your traditions and memories.
This part of the year brings with it lots of reflection on the past months and even the past years. It can be wonderful to look back on some of the best holiday memories that you’ve created. Although your traditional gathering may have been interrupted this year, you may look back at it as one of your fondest ones yet!

Make sure your home is ready for the holidays or any other season with an inspection from NPI.
910Top 5 Christmas Catastrophes and How to Avoid Themhttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/907/top-5-christmas-catastrophes-and-how-to-avoid-themHoliday,SafetyMon, 14 Dec 2020 19:43:00 GMT
TOP 5 CHRISTMAS CATASTROPHES AND HOW TO AVOID THEM
December 14, 2020 | Holiday, Safety | winter, organization, entertaining

Christmas Day is fast approaching, which means now’s the time to get those last few decorations in place. It’s easy to get into a frenzy and rush around, but don’t disregard your own safety to put on a Yuletide spectacle. Here’s how you can avoid injuring yourself and still put together the perfect setup for Saint Nicholas.

Don’t string yourself out with the lights.
If you’ve ever seen National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, then you’ve witnessed exactly what NOT to do when hanging your lights. Clark Griswold finds himself in a comedy of errors by stapling his shirt to the siding, not securing his ladder properly and of course trying to accomplish his master design by himself. Nearly 6,000 people are injured during the holiday season each year due to falling off of a ladder. To keep you and your home protected, remember to:

Enlist the help of at least one other person

Choose a ladder of the appropriate height

Secure and stabilize your ladder

Work during the day and in calm weather

Check your light strands for faulty bulbs and exposed wires

Utilize a timing system for your displays

NPI’s Decorating Tip: You don’t have to knock out your town’s power like Clark for an eye-catching presentation. Sometimes a simple, thoughtful layout is all you need.

Make sure your tree won’t come crashing down.
Whether you have an artificial tree or one straight from the forest, it’s important to keep it from tipping over onto someone. Find a tree that will fit your home and won’t need many alterations. Trimming branches and cutting down the trunk can make a tree less stable and more likely to fall. When you purchase your tree, also buy a stand suited for it and follow the stand’s directions during assembly.

NPI’s Decorating Tip: Put any fragile ornaments on higher branches to keep pets and children from knocking them off.

Remember to always watch your back.
As you move around bulky boxes and heavy furniture during your decorating, don’t overexert yourself. Move larger items with one or two other people so that the load is evenly distributed. When lifting, remember to bend at the knees and keep your back straight to prevent pulling a muscle.

NPI’s Decorating Tip: Take your time rearranging. Sudden jerks or twists can put your shoulders and back at risk of injury.

Open the presents, not your hand.
Wrapping that pile of gifts is a hassle, and you can end up snipping a finger if you’re not careful. Always cut away from your body and make sure that no one else has their hands in the way. The same rules also apply when you’re trying to open your presents or helping smaller children open theirs. For kids, don’t let them use scissors or knives without adult supervision.

NPI’s Decorating Tip: If your wrapping skills are less than Instagram-worthy, check out these tips to get the perfect present!

Keep on top of fire safety practices.
Before you start roasting chestnuts over a fire or accenting your dinner with candles, brush up on your fire safety. Clean out your fireplace and check that its components are working prior to striking a match. With candles, place them where children and pets can’t reach and topple them over. Keep the flames clear of any low-hanging decorations and especially watch your sleeves as you reach for another serving of Christmas pie. The best thing you can do is to have a fire extinguisher close by or stored in an easily accessible spot.

NPI’s Decorating Tip: Candles are great for a traditional Christmas feel, but they can quickly send things up in smoke. Opt for battery-operated versions that’ll still complete the look.

Christmas is a wonderful time of year, but it’s also one that needs an extra amount of caution. From slipping on ice and snow to making sure that air-filled Santa doesn’t burst, it can be a stressful season. Your guests are still days from arriving, but you’re already overwhelmed. And when they do show up on your doorstep . . . well, then what? While the thought of attending to one more to-do list might be enough to tear your hair out, we have the perfect cheat sheet for preparing your home for holiday guests. Here’s how to keep them happy and avoid host regret, even while at your busiest.

Set Out All-in-One Welcome Kits
When you’re at the height of dinner prep mania, the last thing you need is a barrage of questions and requests. Head off distractions and pamper your guests at the same time with welcome kits. These can be totally customizable and they don’t need to cost more than a few dollars each. Consider filling storage cubes with items like travel-size toiletries, books, magazines, towels, and small gifts like holiday-themed chocolates or a $5 gift card to a local coffee shop. You can also include a sheet with the holiday “schedule,” the household Wi-Fi password and any other relevant info.

Create a Quick Tour Guide to Your Area
A little peace and quiet will never go amiss when you’re entertaining, and there’s no shame in encouraging your guests to get out of the house and explore. Take a few moments and create a list of your favorite nearby restaurants, movie theatres, activities and shopping centers and have it ready to go so they can make their own plans.

Have Food and Drinks in Plain Sight
Make your guests feel welcome by inviting them to help themselves—without rummaging through your pantry. Keep snacks out in plain sight and have a well-stocked cooler or fridge with a variety of drinks, preferably out of the way of the kitchen. Dry, non-perishable foods are best. Think snack mixes, granola, pretzels, nuts, dried fruit and popcorn. All the better if it’s holiday-themed! Don’t forget a stack of cups, bowls or plates for people to fill. You’ll also want to have coffee and tea readily accessible for the adults, so be sure to have all the supplies you’ll need.

Keep Them Busy with an Activity Station
To keep the whole staring at separate screens thing to a minimum, set up a card table activity station. This can include things like a challenging jigsaw puzzle for older kids and adults, holiday coloring pages and crayons for children, playing cards and boardgames. If you’re feeling ambitious, you can even set up supplies for cookie decorating or a special holiday craft.

Add a Few Festive Touches
Your home doesn’t need to be decked out to give everyone that warm, fuzzy feeling. Simmering some stovetop potpourri with cinnamon sticks, cloves, cranberries and oranges can go a long way toward creating a festive atmosphere. You can also invest in a few themed centerpieces or fresh flowers. Remember that decorations should never take up too much space on the floor or be placed in areas where they’re prone to being knocked over.

Take Deep Breaths
Remember, hosting guests is a tough job that not everyone is cut out for—and you’re doing it! Take a few moments for yourself here and there throughout their stay and just breathe deeply. If you’re relaxed, your guests will be relaxed. They won’t notice the little things not going over perfectly, especially if you don’t let on that anything is bothering you. Congratulate yourself on a job well done and remember why you invited them in the first place.
8327 Weird Tricks for Dealing with Ice and Snowhttps://www.npiweb.com/Blog/Posts/PostId/77/7-weird-tricks-for-dealing-with-ice-and-snowHome MaintenanceWed, 06 Feb 2019 20:59:00 GMT
7 WEIRD TRICKS FOR DEALING WITH ICE AND SNOW
February 6, 2019 | Home Maintenance | Winter, home exterior, landscaping

You don’t necessarily need a traditional shovel and salt to deal with snow and ice. Instead, these unconventional tricks might just do in a pinch. Keep in mind that none are meant to be a long-term solution—they’re just designed to get you out of a jam when you need to be out of the house and on the road quick.

Melt ice with warm water.
To clear away ice fast from sidewalks, windshields, porch steps, locks and more, good old-fashioned lukewarm water should do the trick. Just be sure that you’re not cutting corners by filling your bucket with hot water. Water that’s too hot can crack glass and even concrete over time. It can also damage locks and warp metal. If you use warm water on your car’s windows, it’s a good idea to grab a squeegee and take care of the run off as soon as you can so it doesn’t refreeze.

Use clear alcohol.
If you have a spare bottle of vodka or rum left over from New Year’s, it’ll definitely come in handy when the weather gets tough. Put a little clear alcohol in a spray bottle and use it to quickly melt ice on your car’s windshield—just don’t stash that spray bottle in the car afterward.

Try rubbing alcohol.
Your secret weapon may have been hiding in your first aid kit all along. Similar to clear alcohol, you can fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol to quickly melt ice on your car windows.

Grab your shop-vac.
Are you getting the most from your shop-vac? If you haven’t used it for a little light snow removal, we’re guessing not! Your wet/dry vac can suck up snow and dump it elsewhere, or it can be put in exhaust mode to blow the snow off your walkways.

Borrow some (clean) kitty litter.
Kitty litter isn’t just for our feline friends. Keeping a container in the trunk of your car can ensure you don’t get stuck if a snowstorm happens to strike when you’re out and about. Scattering kitty litter around your tires can help create just enough traction to get you out of a tough spot.

Dig your leaf blower back out.
Your leaf blower can pull double duty as a snow blower! As long as the snow isn’t too heavy, you can easily use your leaf blower to clear walkways. In the meantime, it might be best to invest in a snow blower if your area is subject to a lot of wet, heavy snow.

Cover it with a tarp.
Any sort of plastic or canvas tarp can double as a car cover—if you can catch your vehicle before the snow starts falling fast, that is. A covering can also be used to protect steps, porches and walkways so you can sleep in instead of waking up early to shovel and lay salt.

Call National Property Inspections today and receive a full report on the condition of your home.
To receive a full report on your home’s condition, call National Property Inspections today.
