One area of home safety that is often overlooked is furniture tip-overs. Anything from television sets to dressers can be pulled onto a child. Here are a few things you can do to limit the chance of this happening:
• Toys and candy: Anything that can be attractive to a young child should never be placed on top of a piece of furniture.
• Never let the cords dangle at the front of the furniture. Keep them safely leading down the back to limit the chance of pulling over a heavy item.
• When you buy a new piece of furniture make sure it has wide legs, has a solid, heavy base, and is stable overall.
• When you put things away try to put heavier items towards the bottom. Never load a top drawer with the heaviest items.
• All TV sets should be placed as low to the ground as possible and towards the back of its stand. You can also attach a TV to the wall using heavy straps or L-brackets.
• Any heavy item that is on a dresser or stand should be set as far back as possible to reduce the chances of a child grabbing it.
By limiting the risk posed by furniture, and supervising young children, you can reduce the chances of an accident happening.
