Why NPI

Founded in 1987, NPI is among the oldest and most widely-respected names in the commercial and home inspection business. Each year, we perform tens of thousands of independent, objective real estate inspections in the United States and Canada. We pride ourselves on our professionalism, honesty and integrity. NPI’s trained inspectors follow national standards as well as any state or local licensing requirements.

Our inspectors come from a variety of backgrounds including: construction, engineering, trade specialties and the upper management of multimillion dollar corporations. They attend two weeks of specialized, intensive training at the NPI Education Center in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by one week of hands-on training in the field with another inspector. We strongly encourage continuing education and offer an opportunity for just that during the NPI annual meeting each November.

All of our nearly 300 inspectors have access to NPI technical support seven days a week. This means questions are answered in a timely manner which means you receive complete results when you need them. This is just one way we show pride in our work and attention to detail.

Hiring a Home Inspector
Qualifications are only one of the factors you should consider when hiring a home inspector. Training and experience in home inspections, including construction and building standards, an understanding of good maintenance practice and clear communication skills are also important. When hiring a home inspector, consider asking the following questions:

What is inspected?
What kind of report will I receive?
Do you carry insurance?
Will I be able to ask questions following the inspection?

 What is inspected?
Confirm what is included in the inspection, such as roof, foundation, built-in appliances, etc. At NPI, our inspections include hundreds of components of the home, including, exterior, interior, foundations, roofs, electrical, plumbing, HVAC and more.

What kind of report will I receive?
Look for a combination report that offers a checklist and narrative format which is easy to read and understand. Ask about on-site reports and the availability of digital photographs. NPI’s software allows the inspector to take and edit photos to pinpoint exactly what the findings are.

 Do you carry insurance?
Ask about company policies, such as errors and omissions insurance, and whether or not they stand behind their report. All National Property Inspections professionals carry errors and omissions insurance.

Will I be able to ask questions following the inspection?
You will want to find an inspector who is comfortable allowing you to attend all or part of the inspection. A walk-through of the home with the inspector can greatly enhance understanding regarding any significant findings in the written report to follow. The inspector should be comfortable answering your questions and describing the findings.
