Finding a Top-notch Real Estate Agent (Part 1) - 2/14/2007
The first step to buying the right house is finding the right agent.

Of course everyone wants to be represented in the sale or purchase of a home by someone they trust. It is after-all among the highest-dollar transactions most people will make in a lifetime. A referral from friends or family is the always the first place to start. However, if that’s not in the cards because of a move or other circumstances, a little research can lead you to the right agent:

1. Local comes first.

Selling or buying a home means understanding local trends, market issues and advertising sources. Check out open house ads for properties in the neighborhood you are interested in. Visit those open houses and meet the agents hosting them. This is a good atmosphere to see the agent in action.

2. Go online.

More and more people are searching the internet for new homes. Search for local agents online by using your city or county name. Look at both the agent’s main website and then his/her blogs. Blogs are one avenue for agents to share information and ideas. Reading the blog may give you a sense of the agent’s personality and attitude.

3. Consider whether or not the agent is a Realtor.

Only agents who are members of the National Association of Realtors are allowed to call themselves Realtors. Realtors are required to maintain membership in the association and follow a specific Code of Ethics.

Once you have a list of several names, it’s time to do some interviews.
